Chestnut enjoying the cricket and sunshine

Added on by Andy Howe.

Chestnut class (and Hazel) have been really lucky to have the excellent Vicky, from the ECB, come in to provide cricket coaching for the past six weeks. Today we practised diamond cricket in preparation for the Key Stage 2 (years 3-6) school tournament, taking place on Wednesday 3rd June.

Please wear your team colours (same as Sports Day)

Chestnut: Area and Perimeter

Added on by Andy Howe.

We have been making use of the good weather and tackling our struggles with measuring area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes (rectangles or shapes made from rectangles, like 'L' or 'U') There is also a lot of problem solving because not all of the measurements are provided.

I loved May's explanation that area was like 'if you had a garden, then area would be how much land I have'. Following that link then perimeter could be the fence or wall around the land.

The children were loud but the sirens were louder! When you hear the siren, make your way to the shelters, don't panic! We have had a really good week learning about World War 2 and the impact on children, as part of the SURVIVAL theme

Carol Dweck - Growth Mindset TED talk

Added on by Chestnut.

Follow this link to Carol Dweck's talk on Growth Mindset, filmed in November 2014

Carol Dweck researches “growth mindset” — the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. In this talk, she describes two ways to think about a problem that’s slightly too hard for you to solve. Are you not smart enough to solve it … or have you just not solved it yet? A great introduction to this influential field.'

The above link will take you to an external site - TED a non-profit organisation, committed to 'Ideas Worth Sharing' in short-talk form

Mindfulness in Chestnut

Added on by Chestnut.

Every morning we are aiming to complete a mindful meditation before we begin the days work. This helps us to be calm, relax and focus on our breathing, as well as thinking about the present 'here and now' state of our bodies and minds.

It is suggested that cushions are used to improve posture when we take part in relaxations that involve sitting upright and so, if possible, please can the children bring in a cushion that will remain in school for the next few weeks of term.

Thank you,

Mr Howe

Chestnut World Cup Home Learning

Added on by Chestnut.

The draw has been made.... Everyone now has another country to support and the matches can commence!

The home learning sheet will be displayed around our world cup wallchart in the cloakroom so make sure it is your best presentation! The information you need to put into the box underneath the kits can be found here on the FIFA official website or in the new Fact File Book in class.

Qualifying = what the team had to do to qualify e.g. won CAF Group A, then beat Turkey 4-1

World cup history = the team's best performance e.g. winners 1966

2014 Group = the group that they are in for the World Cup Finals in Brazil (you can also find this on the wallchart)

The kit designs can be found here on the official store (please be careful - I don't want to hear about you accidentally buying a very expensive shirt!) or in the Fact File

Please bring your home learning and bunting in by Thursday 12th June

Request for DIY rainforest containers in Chestnut class

Added on by Chestnut.

In Chestnut class we will be making our own mini rainforest and we need big, clear (preferably plastic though glass jars will be fine) containers with lids. We will be filling them will soil and plants so the necks need to be wide. We would like to make one each and there are 23 children so if you could help us out, we would be very grateful. We will need them the week beginning 12th May. Thank you, Mr Howe
